The Downside
Students could use more academic support
The Bronx Academy of Health Careers requires students to take four years of math and science and offers a taste of what it might be like to work in a hospital, clinic or nursing home. Students may learn first aid and CPR, volunteer at a health care institution, and meet with health care professionals to get career advice.
The school offers a typical high school curriculum with a focus on health careers. This theme helps students explore potential job options for college, but doesn’t train them for specific careers right away. Elective courses mainly focus on math and science. More students are prepared for college-level work here compared to the city average. However, the graduation rate is below average, and relatively few students are taking advanced courses, even though they’re available.
Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered to students who meet the requirements. Starting in 10th grade, students have the option to take college courses through the CUNY College Now program. Through College Access for All, some students have gone on to earn full scholarships to schools like Princeton, NYU, and Fordham.
Students take part in the many sports teams on the Evander Childs campus, and share facilities like the library, gym and cafeteria with other schools in the building. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, January 2025)
