In addition to classes in art, music, theater and dance, the school offers four years of math and four years of sciencea stronger academic program than many of the citys small schools. Although most students enter performing below grade level, three-quarters graduate on time. The school was the subject of a PBS documentary broadcast in 2007.

The old Evander Childs High School, which graduated its last class in June 2008, had a reputation for violence and disorder. Even after the school closed and several small schools opened in the building, violence has been a problem. A 2010 fight in the cafeteria sent security officers and students to the hospital, Channel 12 reported. However, on a 2012 visit to the building, the schools seemed calm. Halls were clear and schools were increasingly sharing spaces like cafeterias and gyms. This is no longer Evander Childs, reported Bronx Lab Principal Christopher Lagares. Were finally breaking the stereotype.(Aryn Bloodworth, November 2012)
