Evander Childs Educational Complex houses six small schools, each with a specialized focus.
High School of Computers and Technology, the most popular school in the building, prepares students for careers in computer technology. Students get a hands-on introduction to computer programming and repair. All students follow a CTE computer certification track and a SkillsUSA certification exam. In an afterschool robotics club, students prepare for a US robotics competition, play with go-karts and created a hoverboard. Nearly 90 percent of the students are male.
Bronx Lab School has a homey feel, and teachers go by first names. Students go on multi-day trips, including an annual 250-mile biking trip of the Underground Railroad in Ohio and a camping trip for incoming freshmen on the first week of school.
High School for Contemporary Arts has a black box theater, a brightly-lit art studio, a music room, and a dance studio. In addition to classes in art, music, theater and dance, the school offers four years of math and four years of sciencea stronger academic program than many of the citys small schools. Although most students enter performing below grade level, three-quarters graduate on time. The school was the subject of a PBS documentary broadcast in 2007.
Bronx Academy of Health Careers offers students four years of math and science and a taste of what it might be like to work in a hospital, a clinic or a nursing home. Students may learn first aid and CPR, volunteer at a health care institution, or meet with health care professionals to get career advice.
Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts prides itself on its community of writers where students write poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction and songs.
Bronx Aerospace High School.Bronx Aerospace Academy has lost much of its prestige along with its partnership with the Air Force and its JROTC status. Teacher turnover has been high, and nearly half the teachers would not recommend this school to parents, according to the 2012 Learning Environment Survey. It does offer experience with Aviation Ground School, Flight Training and Basic Air Traffic Control Training.
The old Evander Childs High School, which graduated its last class in June 2008, had a reputation for violence and disorder. Even after the school closed and several small schools opened in the building, violence has been a problem. A 2010 fight in the cafeteria sent security officers and students to the hospital, Channel 12 reported. However, on a 2012 visit to the building, the schools seemed calm. Halls were clear and schools were increasingly sharing spaces like cafeterias and gyms. This is no longer Evander Childs, reported Bronx Lab Principal Christopher Lagares. Were finally breaking the stereotype.(Aryn Bloodworth, November 2012)
