The Downside

Below-average graduation rate

Bronxwood Preparatory Academy, a small high school that shares a building with two others in the Wakefield section, has collaborative teachers and a supportive environment, according to school surveys. It has above-average attendance and most teachers recommend it to prospective parents.

However, most students enter with low levels of skills, and the graduation rate is below the citywide average. The student body includes newcomers from Jamaica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Yemen, according to the annual Comprehensive Educational Plan.

The school was founded in 2004 with the name Sports Professions High School. The school was originally designed to build on students' interest in sports by engaging them in themes related to the business and management side of the sports industry. It changed its name to Bronxwood Preparatory Academy in 2008 because students mistakenly believed it offered many sports teams.

The school was housed in two temporary sites before it moved to a new building shared with New World High School and the Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship.
