Many students earn high school credit
Overall achievement needs to improve
The Environmental Science, Mathematics and Technology School, also known as E.S.M.T., or IS 190, is a small, neighborhood middle school located in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. Nearly all teachers say order and discipline are maintained at the school, according to the New York City School Survey, and teacher attendance is excellent.
Students study Spanish and take elective classes in theater and visual arts. In addition to a few sports teams, teens may participate in activities such as cheerleading, yearbook and community service.
State test scores fall below the citywide average, though by 8th grade roughly half of the students earn high school credit taking global history, algebra or living environment. Nearly 95 percent of students pass all their classes in 9th grade, which exceeds the citywide rate.
To boost student achievement, teachers work to improve students analytical skills in reading and discussion according to the schools 2016-17 Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). The school also introduced the Leader in Me program, which is based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. In classrooms and throughout the school teachers and staff encourage students to develop skills such as self-reliance, goal setting, prioritizing work, managing emotions and being considerate of others.
The school shares a building with PS 61, a small elementary school.
ADMISSIONS: Priority to zoned students. The school typically has space for other students and residents of District 12. (Laura Zingmond, based on web reports and DOE data, August 2017)Read more
