Computer science; virtual learning options

The Downside

Academics have a way to go

Explorations Academy offers smaller class sizes, field trips, and the opportunity to study computer science, robotics and technology, in addition to regular high school classes. It is one of the first high schools in the city to offer remote learning options including work-from-home on Fridays.

In the computer science pathway, students explore subjects like digital media, computer programming, web design, and computer systems. They also gain hands-on experience by troubleshooting computer problems as part of a student "tech team.” They have opportunities for paid internships.

In the theater arts program, launched in 2024, students study acting, film, and theater. They perform in school productions and attend Broadway shows. The school also invites theater groups in. Stella Adler Conservatory students performed Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at the school.

The school offers several Advanced Placement (AP) courses including AP Computer Science and AP Environmental Science.

Academic achievement has a long way to go at Exploration Academy. Many students enter with weak academic skills, and the four-year graduation rate is below the citywide average.  On the positive side, attendance is improving.

The YMCA Rowe’s Scholars Program helps students prepare for college with SAT/ACT prep, college tours, and workshops on topics like time management and financial aid.

Clubs include Girls Who Code, Songwriters, and Social Avengers, where students discuss and take action on social justice issues.

Founded in 2005 with grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Explorations Academy shares the huge, landmark 1932 Herman Ridder Educational Campus with two schools. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, November 2024)
