The Downside

Some discipline problems, declining enrollment

Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (MS 113) is known for its classes in dance, vocal music and band. However, the school’s academic performance has a ways to go, and teachers and students complain of discipline problems, according to school surveys.  Enrollment has declined dramatically over the past decade.

Housed in a sprawling four-story brick building in the heart of Fort Greene, Ronald Edmonds has distinct programs with different application codes: the Dual Language programs (choose Spanish or French), the Academy of Performing Arts, The Academy of Computer & Technology Science (ACATS), and Fine Arts & Design.

Photos of student dance and music performances, art work and sports events, are posted on the school's Facebook page

The Advantage after school program, run in partnership with Long Island University, operates Monday to Friday, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., and offers students academic enrichment, assistance, sports and clubs, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan.

Admissions: District 13 choice. Students must audition for the Academy of Performing Arts and the Fine Arts & Design program. Students are admitted to ACATS based on their grades, attendance and test scores. There has been space for every student who applied in recent years. (Lydie Raschka, DOE statistics, March 2019)
