What’s Special
High expectations
The Downside
Discipline problems
PS/IS 262 is a small school located in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant, filled with well-kept brownstone buildings. Long-time Principal Joeletha Ferguson, who grew up in the neighborhood, has high-expectations for students and staff, according to the 2016 Quality Review.
However, more than a third of teachers complain of discipline problems and more than 40 percent mistrust the principal, according to the 2015-16 survey.
The school, built in 1962, added middle school grades in 2010 but, due to low enrollment, the city decided to elimininate the middle school, beginning with a phase-out of 6th grade in 2017.
PS 262 was named for Malcolm X, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, and just inside the main entrance, is a large, colorful mural depicting the black leader watching over a line of school children.
ADMISSIONS: Neighborhood school. (Clara Hemphill, web reports July 2017)
