The Downside

School is closing because of its low performance overall

Wingate High School graduated its last class in June 2006. The Wingate building now houses four small high schools:

High School for Public Service: Heroes of Tomorrow, is a Brooklyn gem, posting top graduation rates while also preparing a higher than average percentage of graduates for college-level work. Students enter either the medical or the legal academy at the school and as they advance, they are expected to write longer essays and conduct their own research.

The School for Human Rights does an impressive job of taking students who enter the school below grade level and gradating them ready for college-level work. Nearly all teachers reported in 2012 that they trust the principal and feel he is an effective leader. More than 90 percent of students responded in the survey that teachers inspire them to learn.

School for Democracy and Leadership aims to develop students that will be a positive force in the world, capable of influencing change and contributing constructively to democracy in our society. The school has two leadership programs, one for math and science and another for law, that offer advanced and specialized courses designed to prepare students for careers.

Brooklyn Institute for Liberal Arts opened in 2012 and plans to offer an extended school day and school year, a structured student-counseling program, and college advisory that starts in the 9th grade with monthly trips to college campuses.

Wingate opened in the early 1950s and educated thousands of Central Brooklyn students, including Barbara Boxer, the senator from California, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. In the last few decades, however, Wingate suffered from overcrowding and violence.

Students pass through metal detectors and students from the School for Democracy and Leadership reported on the Learning Environment Survey that they do not feel safe in or around the building.(Aryn Bloodworth, December 2012)
