IS 218 is a zoned middle school in East New York with a dual language program in Spanish and English. The school has a health theme as well as classes in the arts. Students may study graphic design (combining art and technology) and may also study theater and dance, according to the Annual Arts in Schools Report.  

The school faces many challenges. Attendance is poor and teachers and students complain of discipline problems. Most students arrive with weak academic skills.
