The Downside

Too soon to tell

This school opened in September 2017, under the leadership of principal Nicholas Frangella, previously the assistant principal at PS 186 Dr. Irving A. Gladstone. Frangella has a background in math and science education and has been an instructional coach for other math and science teachers. MS 890 shares a building with PS 889, another new school.

According to MS 890’s website, in addition to the regular curriculum, the school provides two types of academic enrichment. “Learning academies” allow students to take extra classes and do advanced coursework in one of three topic areas: STEM, Humanities, or Arts and Languages. SPARK classes allow students to explore subjects of interest to them outside the traditional curriculum, such as robotics, journalism, urban agriculture, and engineering and architecture.

ADMISSIONS: Open to District 22 students. (Elizabeth Herr, web report, January 2018)
