Our Insights

What’s Special

Strong extra-curricular program.

The Downside

Large class size in the upper grades

Diverse PS 31 is a happening place where children win ballroom dance competitions and star in big musical extravaganzas, while working hard to bring in above average test scores. This safe, orderly school boasts strong leadership and has the benefit of serving a manageable number of kids with special needs and English language learners, who also do very well here based on the results of their state exams.

Classes are large in the upper grades, but attendance is high, which is beneficial for everyone. There are clearly many reasons why a child would want to come to school: the school's lively Facebook page has pictures of ambitious musical productionsthe Little Mermaid and Seussical, Jr.in addition to spring concerts, ballroom dance, a band, chorus and more.

Long-time principal Terri Graybow became principal in 2003 after a period of rapid turnover in leadership. Shortly after she arrived, a teacher said, "She's thoughtful, intelligent and cooperative with teachers and parents." Graybow continues to receive high marks from her staff on school surveys.

The school is "well-developed," the highest rating the city gives to a school.
