Our Insights
What’s Special
Neighborhood school with roots in the community
The Downside
Far from rest of city
The southernmost school in New York State, IS 34 is located in the former home of Tottenville High School, a 1930s-era building refitted in the 1970s to function as a middle school.
Long-time principal John Boyle makes sure he visits every floor of the four-story building every day to chat with teachers and students. "It’s the personal connections that matter most in education," he told Chalkbeat. "Everyone has a story, and you are never going to hear it sitting in your office."
A neighborhood school with roots in the commmunity, many parents were once students at IS 34.
Admission: Zoned neighborhood school. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, February 2019)
