What’s Special

A greenhouse and hydroponics lab

The Downside

Poor attendance

The Academy for Environmental Leadership gives students the chance to grow vegetables in a greenhouse and hydroponics lab created by a non-profit organization called NY Sunworks.

The small school, which opened in the Bushwick Eductional Campus in 2006, has won praise for its high expectations and the teamwork of the staff, according to the Quality Review. Most students feel safe. Students must pass through metal detectors to enter the building.

However attendance is poor, and teachers complain of discipline problems.  (Clara Hemphill, DOE statistics, August 2018)
