Our Insights

What’s Special

All girls school with strong academics.

The Downside

No recess; long day isn't for everyone.

Excellence Girls Charter School, part of the Uncommon Schools network, was founded in 2008 to help young women defy stereotypes--such as the notion that girls aren't good at math and science.

The school has high academic expectations for its students and teachers agree the school and principal hold high standards for teaching and quality student work, according to school surveys. Order and discipline are maintained and student progress is carefully tracked.

The intense, academically demanding school has an extended school year and a school day that begins at 7:10 a.m. and lasts until 3:50 p.m. Students who are struggling academically stay even later for tutoring and comin in on Saturdays. On Fridays, the school dismisses early at 1:20 p.m., so teachers can meet to to reflect on and improve instruction to meet the individual needs of their scholars, according to the school website. There are also weekly Community Meetings on Fridays from 12:25-12:55 p.m. that all families are encouraged to attend.

The focus at Excellence Girls is on literacy and math, and the school boasts of high test scores to show for it. Students receive over three hours of literacy instruction and 60 minutes of math instruction every day, in addition to science and social studies. Students have no time for recess, but do receive art class four days a week, fitness twice a week, and character education once a week. "Choice time," which includes standard kindergarten and first grade activities like play centers and games, is squeezed in twice a week. Classrooms have a 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio for core academic subjects.

The school shares a building with PS 309 George Wibecan School.

Admissions: Lottery, with priority to students who live in District 16 and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. (Annaclaire Diianni-Miller, web reports, July 2013, updated 2017 to reflect princpal change).
