Our Insights

What’s Special

Demanding curriculum includes 3 years of Latin

The Downside

Uncertainty over building lease

Middle Village Preparatory Charter School, which serves grades 6 to 8, has a demanding, traditional curriculum that includes three years of Latin as well as Regents-level classes in math and science, typically offered in high school.

Opened in 2013, the middle school is housed on the campus of Christ the King, which includes a Roman Catholic high school, a child care center and a universal pre-kindergarten program.

Nearly all 8th graders pass Regents exams in either algebra, Living Environment or Earth Science. Students overwhelming say that they feel safe and that bullying is rare. Teacher turnover is low.

Christ the King, which leases space to Middle Village Charter, has long-standing dispute with the Roman Catholic diocese over the presence of a public charter on the Christ the King Campus. The diocese claims that Christ the King has violated an agreement with the Church by giving space to a non-religious school. Middle Village won a reprieve in 2018, but the court case continues, according to the Queens Chronicle.
