The Downside
High suspension rate, teacher turnover
Opened in 2015, Atmosphere Charter School offers laptops for all students; electives such as yoga and robotics; and the opportunity to take trips to the Central Park Zoo, the New York Stock Exchange or Washington, DC.
The school operates on an awards system, where students get one to three stars for good behavior and good grades, Principal Colin Greene explains in a YouTube video. Students are awarded sweatshirts emblazoned with the stars. Other rewards include trips to Six Flags amusement park or even to the Bahamas, according to the video. The 8th grade prom was on a cruise ship on the Hudson River.
A downside: The school has an above average rate of suspensions for students. Teacher turnover was 50 percent in 2016.
Admissions: The school offers open houses for perspective parents. Students are admitted by lottery. Apply on the school’s website before April 1. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, February 2019)
