What’s Special

Cooking lessons to teach English to new immigrants.

The Downside

Discipline problems, poor attendance and low graduation rates

Housed in the Monroe Educational Campus, The High School of World Cultures is designed to teach English to new immigrants, some of whom have had little education in their home countries. Two certified chefs teach cooking, a way to learn work skills while practicing English.

Unfortunately, both teachers and students say there are problems with order and discipline, according to school surveys. Graduation rates are well below the citywide average. Attendance is poor, and about half the students miss more than a month of school, according to Department of Education statistics. There are metal detectors at the entrance of the building. (Clara Hemphill, statistics, July 2018)
