The Downside

Some safety concerns in the building

Brooklyn School for Music & Theatre offers courses in set and costume design, acting and marketing in addition to regular academic classes. A partnership with the Roundabout Theatre Company allows students to take advantage of internships and free Broadway shows over the course of their four years at the school. Some earn CTE Certification in arts, audio/visual technology and communication, which gives them a boost when applying for jobs in those fields. A lively school video shows talented students singing in a choir, acting and dancing. There are some concerns about discipline, safety and order, according to school surveys. The suspension rate is high. To lower suspensions, the school trains students to de-escalate conflicts. Older students are also trained to tutor younger ones to encourage positive behavior and leadership. There is a teen dating awareness group, and individual and group counseling is available on site.

Students may participate in a dozen college campus tours in and out of New York City chaperoned by parents and staff, including an overnight trip that involves parents, according to the comprehensive educational plan. Alumni come back to the school to discuss their college experiences and the school hosts a career day for students.

BSMT shares the Prospect Heights Educational Campus with three other schools. Students pass through metal detectors to enter the building. (Lydie Raschka, DOE data and web reports, December 2018)
