Our Insights

JHS 123 in Soundview, also known as The Bronx Urban Community STEAM Magnet School, offers classes in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) as part of a 5-year federal magnet grant awarded in 2018. The grant is designed to encourage children from outside the school zone to attend the school.

Children take field trips to Lincoln Center, study art with a group called Marquis Studios, create murals to decorate the school and make their own films, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). They study computer science, technology, art history and musical literacy.

JHS 123 serves a needy population, including many children who are learning English as a Second Language and many who need special education services. Nearly one-quarter are in temporary housing, according to the CEP.

The school shares a building with the School for Inquiry and Social Justice.

Admissions: Neighborhood school admits children from anywhere in the Bronx. (May 2019)
