What’s Special

High graduation rates for special ed, English language learners

The Downside

Poor attendance

A small school housed in the Lehman Educational Campus, Bronx River High School offers students an unusual level of attention, thanks to a non-profit organization called Blue Engine that recruits recent college graduates to work as teaching assistants. The 16 teaching assistants work with students in small groups, at lunch and after school.

The school seems to do a good job with students with special needs, as well as those learning English. While most begin 9th grade with weak academic skills, their graduation rates are well above the citywide average.

In addition to offering lots of individual attention, Bronx River has made a special effort to improve students’ writing skills by training teachers in the Hockman Method, which focuses on sentence and paragraph structure.

Unfortunately, attendance is poor, with more than half the students missing at least a month of school. While most students feel safe, there are some behavior problems. The school is working on reducing the suspension rate by offering alternatives to suspension, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan.

Bronx River High School, founded in 2013, is patterned after two other small Bronx schools, Metropolitan High School and Metropolitan Soundview.  Founding Principal Greg Fucheck, who worked in industry for 15 years before becoming a NYC Teaching Fellow, taught at Metropolitan High School and was on the planning team for Metropolitan Soundview.
