Our Insights
Founded in 2004, Bronx Writing Academy (BWA) has long struggled with attendance, test scores, discipline and order. It shares a building with MS 22, another struggling middle school of about the same size, and the strict, very high-performing Success Academy Bronx 2 Charter, which serves grades 5 – 8.
Teachers at BWA use the respected Middle School Quality Initiative, designed to boost reading, in part by using specific vocabulary words each week in all academic subjects and hosting debate teams. The directory says there are enough laptops for all students to use in school, and robotics and coding are options.
Bronx Writing Academy offers free after school activities such as sports and arts, according to the middle school directory. Parents may pick up free groceries at the school, take English classes and attend workshops.
BWA is located in Concourse Village, one of the poorest communities in the country, with a high unemployment rate. Students get extra help in summer and Saturday classes, as well as after school.
Admissions: Open.
