Success Academy Bronx 2 Charter Middle School

Opened in 2014, Success Academy Bronx 2 Charter Middle School is part of the Success Academy network. Strict discipline, a long school day, and demanding expectations are hallmarks of the network's aapproach. 

Other features include debate, daily independent reading, and lots of science. Parents are expected to be supportive and involved. Some students may be asked to arrive before 9 am for extra help, according to the Success Academy website. 

Test scores are among the highest in the city. Parents and staff give the school high marks on the quality of instruction. Teachers overwhelmingly say the school is safe and orderly, despite the school’s location in Concourse Village in the Bronx, one of the poorest communities in the country. 

All teachers attend “T Training” in the summer prior to the start of classes. They learn to give the same message and use the same language so teachers can be as consistent as possible. 

Success schools have a reputation for strict discipline and many have high suspension rates; Bronx 2’s suspension rate is more than three times the citywide average. 

The charter school shares a building with two small middle schools, Bronx Writing Academy, and MS 22.
