The Downside

Poor attendance

The West Bronx Academy for the Future, one of six small schools housed in the Theodore Roosevelt Educational Complex, offers a traditional Regents-prep curriculum to children in grades 6-12. Principal Wilper Morales is well-regarded by the staff, according to school surveys.

Most students enter 6th grade reading below grade level and attendance is poor. Nonetheless, most students graduate from high school on time.

The Theodore Roosevelt High school complex, built in the 1920s, has a swimming pool, several gyms, weight rooms, and a nice library. Students must pass through metal detectors.

Admissions: The middle school is open to students from district 9 and 10. The high school gives preference to continuing 8th graders. It admits new students according to educational option formula designed to ensure a balance of low- and high-achievers. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, November 2018)
