What’s Special

Aviation Program

The Downside

High Chronic Absenteeism

Bronx Aerospace High School on the Evander Childs Educational campus offers an aviation program for qualifying students who are interested in aviation engineering or becoming pilots. Students in this program may take courses at Vaughn College, work towards passing the FAA Written Exam and log flight hours.

Unfortunately, the school suffers from high rates of chronic absenteeism, the suspension rate is high, and the graduation rate is below the citywide average, according to DOE data.

Founded in 1996 as a Junior R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program that prepared students for the military, Aerospace was originally a program in Evander Childs High School. It became a school in its own right in 2003, when Evander was divided into small schools. Sadly, it lost much of its prestige when it lost its partnership with the Air Force and its JROTC status in 2014.

Bronx Aerospace is on the Evander Childs Educational campus and shares the building with five other small schools. The campus has a football field, and schools often share the facilities like the cafeteria and library. Students enter through metal detectors, although safety seems to have improved according to the NYC School Survey results. (Melanie Quiroz, web reports and DOE data, October 2018)
