Our Insights

The School of Mathematics, Science and Technology through the Arts (I.S. 318) is a tiny middle school that shares a building with PS 211 (pre-k–8)  and Children's Aid College Prep Charter School (K-5).

IS 318 offers keyboard lessons, and is expanding its music program to include several performance groups. The school won a $500,000 grant from The Matisse Foundation for Arts Education in 2018, according to the school’s yearly set of goals called the Comprehensive Educational Plan.

Many students arrive with low skills and about one-third miss at least a month of school. Test scores are low and enrollment has been declining in recent years.

However, the principal’s Twitter account show teens coding, making circuits, shooting photos in the park, and filming a news report. Students travel to Philadelphia and Washington D.C. to visit colleges and explore history. They take in culture, such as a Broadway musical called A Bronx Tale and the Metropolitan Opera.

Admissions: There has been room for all who applied in recent years. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, June 2019)
