The Downside

Academics have a ways to go

A small school focused on the arts, Bronx Envision is a place where "students who are creative and curious will thrive," says founding Principal Emily Shu, a former arts teacher.  Students may take a four-year sequence in art, dance, theater or music. No audition is required for admission.

Students take trips to museums and performances; teaching artists come to the school; and student artwork is displayed in outside galleries. The school has partnerships with many art organizations such as the New York City Ballet, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Classic Stage Company.

While the arts programming is strong, academic achievement has a way to go. Many students enter with weak academic skills, attendance is poor, and the graduation rate is below the citywide average.  On the positive side, the school has high expectations for students and there is “high level of trust” between administration and staff, according to the city’s Quality Review.

Founded in 2011, Bronx Envision is housed in a huge, landmark 1932 building known as the Herman Ridder Educational Campus.
