What’s Special

Classes in dance, visual arts and theater

The Downside

High rates of absenteeism

MS 57, also known as the Ron Brown Academy, is a tiny middle school in Bedford Stuyvesant that offers classes in dance, visual arts and theater. Students may make visits to cultural organizations, attend Broadway shows, and have resident artists as mentors, according to the Annual Arts in School Report.

The school faces many challenges. It has long struggled with low enrollment. Most students enter with weak academic skills. Attendance is poor, and many students miss more than a month of school. On the positive side, students say they feel safe, according to school surveys.

MS 57 shares a building with two high schools, Brooklyn Academy of Global Finance and Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy, an all-girls charter school.

Admissions: District 16 choice. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, April 2019)
