The Downside

Closing because of poor performance

IS 166 closed in 2015 after years of poor performance and a reputation as an unruly place. In 2014 it landed on the state's list of persistently dangerous schools. Despite being named after the composer George Gershwin, the school never had a strong music program.

The Van Siclen Community Middle School opened in 2013 to replace IS 166.(Pamela Wheaton, web reports, 2015)
