The General D. Chappie James Middle School of Science opened in September 2008 as a replacement school for struggling PS 183 which closed in June 2008. Chappie Middle School never found its footing as it also struggled with low test scores and a high absenteeism rate. In 2014, only 38 percent of teachers said they would recommend the school to parents, on the annual survey, and only a handful of students passed the state math and ELA exams.
The school formally closed in June 2015, at the same time that the General D. Chappie James Elementary School in the building also closed. A new set of elementary and middle schools now share the building: PS 446 Riverdale Avenue Community School
and Riverdale Avenue Middle School
