What’s Special
High expectations and accessible teachers
The Downside
Poor attendance
A tiny school with fewer than 50 children in each grade, Riverdale Avenue Middle School shares a building with Riverdale Avenue Community School, an elementary school.
Parents say the principal and teachers are always accessible and that they have “the highest expectations for their children that they have ever experienced,” according the Quality Review, a two-day visit by a Department of Education official.
While attendance is poor and most students begin 6th grade with weak academic skills, children make significant progress while they are here, according to Department of Education data.
Every Friday afternoon, students take part in “enrichment clubs” that include cooking, dance, martial arts, African drumming, fashion design, cheerleading/step, chess, computer coding, and filmmaking, according to the Comprehensive Education Plan. After-school activities are available until 6 pm, according to the middle school directory.
Admissions: District 23 choice. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, February 2019)
