Our Insights

On the outskirts of downtown Flushing, JHS 189 offers a dual language program in English and Mandarin Chinese, designed to strengthen students’ ability to read, write and speak in both languages. Nearly one-third of JHS 189 students, including some with little previous formal schooling, are learning English.

Incoming students range from those who are two or three years behind grade level to top students poised for more challenge. The school has honors and Regents (high school-level) classes. There is also a Saturday academy and after school help for struggling students.

Arts offerings include studio art, choral music and theater. Students may take part in musical theater performances such as Aladdin. They choose either studio art, with an introduction to graphic design, or design/animation. Samples of student paintings, sculpture and videos can be seen on the school website.

JHS 189 shares a building with the safe and well-managed Flushing International High School for recently arrived immigrants. The asphalt yard is being transformed into a green playground for the school and community.

Admissions: Zoned neighborhood school. The dual-language Chinese program is open to students from Queens (Lydie Raschka, web reports, May 2019)
